A herpes link to Alzheimer’s

Multiple studies suggest that there’s a link between several common herpes viruses and the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

  In one study, at least 70 per cent of elderly people, including those with Alzheimer’s, had HSV-1 (the herpes simplex virus that causes cold sores) in their brains. Moreover, those who had both HSV-1 and the APOE e-4 gene, which has already been linked to Alzheimer’s, were much more likely to develop the brain disease than those without either.

  While this study does not prove that herpes viruses cause Alzheimer’s, another study found that patients infected with herpes who had sought antiviral treatment (using drugs such as acyclovir) cut their risk of developing dementia later in life by a factor of ten.

Managing gut bacteria and diet may alleviate anxiety

  People who experience anxiety symptoms might be helped by taking steps to regulate the microorganisms in their gut using probiotic and non-probiotic food and supplements, and changing their diet. Gut bacteria may regulate brain function via the ‘gut-brain axis,’ according to a review of 21 studies involving a total of 1503 people.

  Of the 14 studies that tested probiotics to regulate intestinal microbiota, 36 per cent were effective in reducing anxiety symptoms. Six of the remaining seven studies using non-probiotic methods, such as adjusting daily diet over a set period, found an 86 per cent rate of effectiveness.

Testosterone replacement could ease COPD

  Researchers who analysed data from more than 700 men with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) found that those who started testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) were less likely to be hospitalized for respiratory problems than those who didn’t; this effect was greatest in men 66 and older. TRT may also slow the progression of the disease.
